Senior Wing Beam

Overview
Your year-long project in Flight by Design is to design, build, test, and optimize a wing. This project is similar to the freshman year wing-beam project, but is much more technical and involved. This is an opportunity to demonstrate how much you've learned and how far you've come in your four years at AHS.

The major milestones for the project are summarized below.

  1. Research the NACA airfoil definitions and develop a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that will generate NACA 4-Digit airfoils.
  2. Coordinate with other students to then build physical models of various NACA 4-Digit airfoils and test them in the wind-tunnel. Determine the peak efficiencies for different airfoils and recommend when a particular NACA airfoil should be used.
  3. Construct a 3D CAD model of a wing and stress test it using Finite Element Analysis. Optimize the figure of merit.
  4. Present your results to a panel of experts.

Schedule

Senior Wing Beam is different from other AHS projects - it's much longer. In fact, most of the year is allocated to this one project. This requires you to schedule and manage your own defined tasks and incremental products to demonstrate continued progress. I will provide the major milestone dates ("drop dead dates") that you have to hit, but your day-to-day schedule and work items are your responsibilities.

The major milestones correspond to the major phases of the project above.
