Chapters 2 and 3 introduce basic astronomic facts and history, which you should be familiar with from previous astronomy units in general science from middle school and freshman year. They include the causes for phases of the moon and the seasons, and the early history of astronomy from the Greeks and Europeans. This includes the big names of Ptolemy, Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo.
In addition to chapters 2 and 3 we will begin a project that will allow you to explore the concept of scientific models, and also understand the role that traditional physics and math plays when studying astronomy.
Suggested homework problems are listed below. Homework will not be turned in or counted for a grade. Instead homework content will be assessed via in-class quizzes. The quiz questions will be based on the homework problems. Answering the homework problems will be a way for you to assess your understanding and provide opportunities for you to ask me questions about the content. The "finish by" date below is the earliest date I can quiz you on the material.
Tests will be mathematical in nature. The quantitative questions at the end of the chapters will be good practice for the astronomy tests. In addition tests will cover concepts and math related to the work done on projects.
